The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

England & Wales

IMPORTANT SCHEME RULE CHANGE 28th April 2026
The Heat Pump Go installer must deduct the full value of the BUS voucher in advance from the total price of the installation. This must be clearly shown in your customer quote.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides capital grants to support the installation of a heat pump in homes and non-domestic buildings in England and Wales.

All property owners should contact the BUS Enquiries team for general advice and guidance. Please note that Ofgem are unable to provide pre-emptive assurance on applications, or speculate on requests their review team may make throughout the application or redemption journey. Scheme T&C's apply.

Ofgem Property Owner Guide: Ofgem full guide here.

How much does the BUS scheme pay?

£7,500 voucher payment for the installation of an air source or ground source heat pump.

Eligible self-builds

  1. Properties where a builder is contracted by an individual, to create a “custom-build” new property.
  2. Properties which have not had any previous heating system installed and have not been occupied or used prior to commissioning of the heat pump. E.G. the conversion of a derelict building to become a domestic property.

Eligible existing properties

  1. Example domestic properties: owner-occupied properties, properties rented out to tenants, second homes and holiday homes.
  2. Example non-residential properties: churches, community centres and office spaces.
  3. Replacing a fossil fuel based or direct electric heating system.

What evidence does the property need to provide?

  1. Eligible self-builds: Evidence must demonstrate that the property was principally funded by the owner/individual and not a company. E.G. title deeds, build contract, invoice for substantial materials PAID FROM A PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNT.
  2. Existing domestic/non-domestic properties: An EPC, or alternative evidence of previous fossil fuel/direct electric heating, and proof of property ownership.

How does it work?

  1. Customer Quotation: You will deduct the full value of the BUS voucher in advance from the total price of the installation. This must be clearly shown in your customer quote. We need a copy of this as part of the application.
  2. Heat Pump Go: Order and pay for your service.
    1. We recommend you do not purchase equipment and start the installation until the application has been approved.
  3. MCS engagement letter: Property owner must sign and return this for us to submit the application, before you progress the installation.
  4. BUS Application & Approval: The property owner is responsible for sending all evidence to us to make the application.
    1. Ofgem will email them to provide their consent, which must be provided within 14 days, or the application will be closed.
    2. You have 3 months (6 months for ground source) from the approval date to complete the installation, and for us to MCS certify and redeem the voucher.
    3. If the application is not approved, you will need to agree with your customer if/how to proceed.
  5. BUS Redemption & Payment: We apply to redeem the payment. We will transfer payment to the Heat Pump Go installer, once received from Ofgem.
    1. The voucher must be redeemed within 120 days of the heat pump commissioning date.

How long does it take?

  1. We have no control over the application process. The property owner will get the same Ofgem update email as us.
  2. Ofgem Application & Approval: In our experience, 2-3 weeks, once we have received the signed MCS letter from your property owner and they have sent us their application evidence.
    1. Additional Information: The property owner must provide any additional information if requested within 14 days to avoid delay.
  3. Ofgem Redemption & Payment: In our experience, 2-3 weeks from redemption request, and payment to installer bank account.
